On August 29, Assumption Seminary in San Antonio made Bishop Barnes the Honoree of its 2019 Leadership in Faith and Service Gala. Bishop Barnes’ ties to Assumption Seminary are significant. He is an alumnus of the seminary; he later served as Rector; and the Diocese of San Bernardino has sent many of its seminarians there over the years.

The Gala took place at Holy Trinity Parish in San Antonio and Bishop Barnes was introduced at the dinner by his good friend, Father David Garcia.

In May, Bishop Barnes was given an Honorary Doctorate from the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio. This is the school where many Diocesan seminarians conduct their theological studies, while they live and receive advisement, Spiritual Direction, attend retreats at Assumption Seminary.

The Honorary Doctorate was celebrated May 9 at the Whitley Theological Center in San Antonio. Coincidentally, Fr. Garcia also received an Honorary Doctorate that evening. Bishop Barnes was not able to receive the honor in person but Diocesan Seminarian Bryant Rivas accepted on his behalf.

“I can tell you that Bishop Barnes holds this institution in very high esteem,” Rivas said. “He holds San Antonio very near and dear to his heart.”
