“I am so proud of the 2018-2019 Decathlon Team for their dedication and time spent in preparation leading to placing first at the Diocesan Event,” said Camille Lockhart, Coordinator of the SHA team. “Sacred Heart Academy is honored to represent the Diocese of San Bernardino in the upcoming State Decathlon.”

It was a sweet moment for the students after countless hours spent preparing for the competition

“We had done a lot of work for the Decathlon and it finally paid off,” said SHA eighth grader Abby Barrows.

After learning they had finished second in the Super Quiz, the SHA team knew they had a chance at winning, but none of the other results were posted until the end of the day – adding an element of suspense.

“We were all holding hands together and saying, ‘we got this,’ “ recalled SHA eighth grader Madelyn Hellrich of the anticipation. Sacred Heart Academy took first place overall by a mere 22 points.

St. Hyacinth Academy, San Jacinto, another school that has won the event many times over the years, placed second overall. Sacred Heart School, Palm Desert placed third overall in this year’s Academic Decathlon.

In the decathlon’s individual competitions the first place finishers were Richelle Bartolome, Resurrection Academy (writing); Bibin Chakkunyal, Sacred Heart, Palm Desert (religion); Patrick Munoz, St. Margaret Mary (math); Javier Delgado, St. Hyacinth Academy (current events); Bridget Archuleta, St. Hyacinth Academy (social studies); Aileen Corpus, Sacred Heart Academy (fine arts); Aila Oliver, Our Lady of the Assumption (science); Naomi Colinayo, St. Edward (English).
