 The February 11 announcement of the abdication of Pope Benedict XVI, effective just 19 days later, certainly came as a shock to those of us in the Catholic clergy. But this papal resignation is not the first of these events to take place; indeed, they are not all that uncommon. It’s just that it has not happened for a few centuries.
