One of the strategies the Diocese of San Bernardino promotes to address child abuse is education and the primary tool is training. The Diocese uses Protecting God’s Children from VIRTUS as its program.

When a person attends a VIRTUS live session of the Protecting God’s Children they first learn how abuse affects a victim and then, five ways to look out for a predator. This second part is what so many people forget. VIRTUS helps delay forgetfulness with the ongoing educational part of their training—the monthly bulletins. Monthly bulletins help to keep our training fresh.

One of the Virtus bulletin writers, Sharon Doty, J.D. points out in her article “How Can Abuse Go Undetected for So Long,” that there are three main reasons abuse goes undetected.

First, many people think—“sexual abuse could not happen to my child.” Second, child molesters groom the child and the community in which the molester lives. Third, and probably most common, fear of reporting, especially if the predator is a family member or a good friend.

We must be willing to take actions necessary to protect children. We must remember that children are vulnerable. We must be vigilant and recognize dangers when they are present. If we aren’t sure but think we see suspicious behavior, we must report that behavior to the people in charge. Courageous reports can save a child from becoming a victim. Silence supports an abuser and may cause a child to become a victim.

If you receive monthly bulletins, take the time to read them carefully. It only takes three to five minutes to read and answer the question at the end. Each bulletin addresses a topic or an issue that may affect our children. It is always good to have knowledge that will help. If you have any questions about our VIRTUSW training, give us a call. 909-475-5127 or 909-475-5129.
