The main presenter for the evening will be Father Paul Zirimenya, a deaf priest from the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He will share on the role of the Church in ministering to the needs of the faithful and how parishes can minister and reach out to the deaf in their communities.
“There is a misconception that there aren’t any deaf in the parish,” said Teresa Rocha, vicariate consultant in the Office of Catechetical Ministry. “I hope that our parishes will look at one thing that they can do for our deaf brothers and sisters. This is about evangelization and missionary work that needs to be done here and now.”
Aside from Father Zirimenya, participants will also hear from a deaf youth and his mother. They will share their experiences of faith and the church. Members of the Holy Hands Deaf Ministry will lead the participants in prayer and serve as leaders throughout the night.
There will be an opportunity to recognize the six parishes who currently host interpreted Masses in the diocese.
The night will also serve as the launching of a new fundraising campaign for the ministry, which receives no designated funding from the diocese. In order to organize more events and outreach, the ministry needs to raise funds.
