SAN BERNARDINO—A trusted advisor and strong promoter of Catholic Social Teaching, Verne Schweiger retired from his position as director of the diocesan Office of Social Concerns June 28.

 “Working in this Church has been a great gift,” Schweiger said. “It has taught me the lesson that it’s hard to carry out effective ministry without structure. It has been a time of great growth.”

Priests establish web-based shows to spread faith

 For Father Mike Manning, SVD, and Father Steve Porter, STL, providing spiritually uplifting and formational content to the masses is a joy and a priority. Both priests hope to strengthen their evangelizing efforts through the world of online entertainment media.

 Similar to his mobile app of the same name, Fr. Manning and the religious media organization he founded, Wordnet Productions, launched iGOD TODAY June 14. Toan Pham’s ordination to the priesthood caps 16 years of struggle and vocational committment

SAN BERNARDINO—Following nine years of serving the Riverside Pastoral Region as Episcopal Vicar, Monsignor Tom Wallace, E.V., will take on a new role in the diocese as director of the Missions Office. Bishop Gerald Barnes announced Msgr. Wallace’s new position and his appointment of Father Rafael Partida as the new Episcopal Vicar for the Riverside Pastoral Region earlier in the year.

Year of Faith celebration continues with songwriting contest

SAN BERNARDINO—The diocese continues to celebrate the Year of Faith with a Music Composition Contest that invites youth and young adults to compose an original song that will be performed at the diocesan Mass that closes the papal year.

 Persons aged 13-25 are invited to submit an original song to the diocesan Office of Worship by July 1. The submission should include the lyrics, a musical score or chord chart and a simple recording of the song. Incorporation of the diocesan vision statement into the composition is encouraged, and a bilingual song is also welcomed.

YUCAIPA—Bishop Gerald Barnes and Auxiliary Bishop Rutilio del Riego recognized members of the community with the St. Bernardine Award, Guadalupe Award and the Pope John Paul II Youth Award for their outstanding dedication and service at the annual Diocesan Awards blessing held on May 20 at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church in Yucaipa.
