On Dec. 6, Bishop Alberto Rojas announced that after six faithful years of service, Dr. Sam Torres submitted his resignation as Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese.

“I am grateful to Dr. Torres for his leadership during these past six years, especially as our Catholic schools navigated the many challenges of the pandemic,” Bishop Rojas said.

Dr. Torres’ prayerful decision came in light of the various health and family challenges that he had been facing.

“We pray for many years of health and happiness for Dr. Torres as he moves into this new chapter of his life and turns toward the full-time enjoyment of his family, especially his three new grandchildren,” Bishop Rojas said.

Dr. Torres has served in Catholic education for over 20 years. His began his career in education as a Catholic school teacher, high school baseball coach, Campus Minister, Dean of Students, Assistant Principal and Principal, serving 12 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and more recently, nine years in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as Principal of Pomona Catholic School.

Dr. Torres was especially passionate about initiating and maintaining opportunities for the marginalized and underserved to support their success in Catholic educational institutions. He was devoted to building, leading, and partnering in relationships that examine the church’s responsibility to provide socially equitable Catholic education.

Dr. Torres was appointed the 7th Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of San Bernardino in June of 2018. He served as Diocese’s first Latino Superintendent of Catholic Schools.
Bishop Rojas asks to keep the Office of Catholic Schools in your prayers in this time of transition.
