The San Pedro Community, Region 18, which participates in the a Church in Riverside, CA, was formed 25 years ago. This community is made up of people from different indigenous communities in Guatemala. Many people from the villages of San Pedro Soloma, Santa Eulalia, and Barillas joined the community here in the United States.

Many families immigrated to the United States due to the wars being experienced in Guatemala, while others arrived in search of a better future for their families. Even though they finds themselves far from their homeland and adapting to a new environment, they have never abandoned their culture and religion.

The community preserves their Mayan language, Q'anjob'al, the foods prepared for special holidays, and the music played to the sound of the marimba. In addition, many women continue to wear their traditional garments known as huipil and corte.

The community celebrates numerous holidays throughout the year, such as the celebration of the Black Christ of Esquipulas, the feast of Saint Eulalia, and Saint Peter. These celebrations include Mass at the parish, followed by socializing and music. Posadas and other festivals are also held at the house of prayer, with the liturgy of the word and the sharing of tamales or bread.

Several community members have undergone formation to serve as ushers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, and catechists in their parishes. The community continues to grow and has seen increased participation of young people in its activities.
