The Purépecha indigenous community began migrating several decades ago and is currently settled in the Coachella Valley. Their migration is driven by the desire to provide a better future for their families through employment and education. Most of the community works in the agricultural sector, picking lemons, oranges, chili peppers, grapes, and dates.
Every year, the Purépecha community gathers as a community of faith to celebrate the Feast of the Our Lady of Guadalupe. On this occasion, they prepare special foods that they share with everyone, in addition to performing the traditional Dance of the Old Men.
Dance of the Old Men: This is a pre-Hispanic dance that was transformed during the colonial era. Originally linked to gratitude for the sun and the fertility of the earth, it is now featured at patron saint festivals, fairs, and important celebrations of the Purépecha community, such as the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Day of the Dead.
On these special days, some of the foods that are prepared are nacatamales, barbacoa, and freshly made tortillas. During these festive days, we all share the same table with these sacred foods. We bring these traditions to our communities where we actively participate in our local parish where we serve in various ministries.
